If you have looked over a few of my recent posts covering how to create a personal backup, you might have a thumbdrive loaded with some applications but there is still the prime reason to create this emergency backup in the first place…You need to decide upon which documents and files to backup in this drive…
The good news is that if you have already loaded up GoodSync all you will need to do is to move whatever files you wish to the specific folder you are using as a thumbdrive backup, then the next time you sync your thumbdrive these documents and files will be loaded too…
This covers most of what I have talked about…so far. The next step would be to try to consider which documents would be important to have in an emergency. The list of some possibilities or this could go on and on…
· Scans of your medical records
· Scan of birth certificate
· Scan of drivers license / car title / insurance information / VIN number of car
· Insurance information (home, rental, life insurance, health coverage, etc.)
· Lists of Prescription medications
· Your resume
· Local list of contacts (i.e. an address book, including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses)
· Professional certificates / diplomas / military records (i.e. DD214)
· A scan of the first page of your Passport
· Scans of important business cards from:
o Your Doctor
o Banker (including bank phone #’s , Swift number and account numbers to enable wiring to and from your account)
o Insurance agent
· Include a number of scans of all of your credit cards (both sides) and include a list of the URL’s of the associated sites)
· Scans of deeds or apartment contracts
· Inventory lists of any personal items of value
· A list of the websites in which you have any login / passwords… Minimally a link to a service like LastPass (which would have this information…to download into a text file…)
· A number of picture ID’s as well as a copy of your signature (as JPG files)
· An inoculation record (if you have one)
If you have a family, there may be a need to replicate a number of these items for every family member.
All in all, this is just a start on a list of the things which would have some practical value if you were in an emergency situation (i.e. in a major accident, house fire, floods, etc.).
There is still a final step in this preparation (to ensure that only you will have access to these files…coming soon.
