What are the hardest languages to learn?

Many years ago, I attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey California. This Defense department school provided language instruction for (even then) well over 100 languages. After about a year there, the common small talk was about how tough your language was when compared to… the big winners were Korean, Mandarin, and Arabic (regardless of the dialect), the losers were Spanish, and almost any western European language (the further west, the easier…).

This is a topic which I haven’t given that much thought to…for several decades, but now that we are enmeshed in a global marketplace, there is a growing need to develop some language skills (far more than back in the 70’s).

With this in mind, I can only hope that this infographic may spur a few of you to consider learning something new…
