Every once in a while I run across something online which is: so stupid, so ‘over the top’, so ridiculous, or just plain lame that I feel impelled to share these little tidbits of (soon to be) meaningless trivia. For this week, I have found two completely disparate topics which were both so nutty that I had to show them to you…
First off, I have a video of a French researcher and experimenter (self evident on all of these counts), who seems to have come up with what appears to be a means to view 3-D movies without resorting to using the 3-D glasses. It seems that he merely attached some electrodes to his head (near each eye) and runs some low level of current in 30 hertz pulses (each eye, out of phase with the other). The net result is that he is (as the tester) physically caused by these electrical currents to blink in synchrony with the screen… at this point I think you should watch the video, it will all become clear.

The fact of the matter is that this method could work (for short periods, and it would take nearly the amount of focus needed to resolve a stereogram…). On the other hand, this is so self evidently non-commercial that it makes you wonder as to what the point of this work is (other than some potential masochism on the tester’s part…).
For my second entry, I have a topic which is about as full of meaningless self absorption and over the top self indulgence. This is the planning stages for what will undoubtedly be the world’s most expensive yacht (1.18 billion dollars (US)). This ‘world’s largest house boat’ is supposed to look like someone took a scoop out of Monaco, complete with sand beaches and a heliport. Once again, this is so over the top that you should just go to the following links to get a sense of what some people think is an appropriate way to spend a billion dollars…
