Last week I addressed the growing number so of computer (laptop) users who feel impelled to personalize the exteriors of their trusty sidekicks. The addition of stickers is also somewhat of a means to social identification, in that if you are a Linux user, are predisposed to play Warcraft, are proud of your school, or even have some deeply held political beliefs you can broadcast this information to everyone else in the coffee shop, student union, or classroom you are in.
This use of stickers is a populist bottom up sort of movement (if adding stickers to a laptop can be classified as a social movement…), but there are some other ways to make similar sort so of aesthetic improvements to your computer.
If you are more artistically inclined you can create a custom skin or your device, if you are still inclined but less talented (or too busy) you can probably find a lot of worthwhile designs to add to your computer too.
This commercial means to adorning computers is a bit less ‘bottom up’ in its motivation, but it is not ‘top down’ either… The addition of skins seems to me to be a tidier way to implement these sorts of changes to a computer (they leave little or no marks or adhesives). So with the following list of only a few of the online vendors for skins, there are plenty of additions to consider and I may actually upgrade my NetBook (and document it here…).
