Pipes

Yahoo-pipesThis week I have already looked at Storify (a social networking tool to create stories), and Twitter searching… which may be a prerequisite to using Storify. The fact of the matter is that there are a number of other online tools and apps with which you can gather, collate, and digest a lot of information. Yahoo Pipes is an online app which allows you to make your own mashups of information

Simply stated, Pipes allows you to take an RSS feed (as an example), to mix it with some other feeds, to ‘strain it’ for specific information, and to present it to you. With an app like this, you could create your own personal feeds, using major news sites, your Google Reader, or almost anything you can find on the web. I have some guides on how to use it, and some examples for you to consider.

private @riehler - can you pls correct a typo. It is "mash" instead of "mosh". I must have had a time shift and was thinking in terms of the good-old days of punk rock and mosh pits.

How is anyone supposed to get any sleep anymore? How are we, as mere humans, supposed to manage all this fractionalizing and digital re-homoginization of data? We're living in a massive matrix, and with the whole concept of the Gutenberg parenthesis, we've gone from the very flat textuality (-ism?) of the period we just closed, to have to confront, no let me correct myself, to *process* this data *as if we were a computer* but now as you've pointed out, computers are "technically" capable of telling stories. I've got so many pieces of data archived for planned use, that by the time my brain can put all the mashes I've started back together, I am truly confused. I don't think many people realize it, or think about it, or know about it, but we're living in the middle of a digital stratosphere with an infinite # of layers. But the problem is data doesn't take up any space, it is *virtual* space, so something could be x to the 118th layers thick and still appear the same on our computer screen. Help, get me out of here!!!!
To me, it seems like the only difference between intellectuals and non-intellectuals is actually a paradox. The intellectual has somehow mastered the art of quieting the mind enough to filter the signal to noise ratio, which to most people sounds like noise.
Thanks for listening, I'm going to try to get some sleep now. I really enjoy your site.
