The idea of using an iPhone app to help create paper airplanes is not the most obvious use for the Apple smartphone I could have imagined. But upon some reflection, I have seen value in using the internet to help me accomplish a wide variety of related tasks, form pieces of computer code (to cut and paste), to footprints for PCB components, to printable origami directions, and so on, and on…
As a teacher, the idea of taking some time to develop some of these skills may have some value (along with similar school arcane as pen spinning, juggling, card tricks and other ice breakers…).
I suppose that there is a strange whimsical character to these sorts of activities. I find this to be just a bit ironic in that these are the sorts of activities which can connect the virtual world of internet, computer displays, and data to the real world…something which is, as yet, relatively untapped potential.

When I chanced across World Record Paper Airplanes, I found myself doing something I haven’t done for a long time – folding paper airplanes. I am sure you all know a thing or two about this. However, when the author/collaborator of this App is a Guinness Record Holder for the longest airplane flight (16.89 seconds), it’s time to take note.
Just in case you think 16.89 seconds of flight it’s easy, don’t start throwing your paper airplanes off high buildings yet. The rules for a World Record Throw are:
· It must be attempted indoors
· The flight must start at the ground and end at the ground level
· The plane must be made from a continuous sheet of paper
The App has 3 free designs for you, the Stunt, the Dart, and the Eagle with step-by-step instructions (animated) on how to fold and create the various airplanes. Now this is all fine for me, but if you want to graduate to the cooler stuff – like I do – you need to upgrade to get 15 other cooler plane designs ($1.99).
World Record Paper Airplanes is a free download for the iPhone and iPad with an upgrade (via in-app purchase) for US1.99.
