is the internet over?

h bombThere are posts I come across of a certain nature which are starting to become a pet peeve of mine. I have come across and written about online articles bemoaning the end of: blogging, or blogging as we know it, of the NetBook, of the PC, of the PC as we know it, of books and/or eReaders, and almost anything else which a manipulative writer can come up with to engender some increased readership to whatever site or blog which he (or she) may write for… I find the general trope of decrying the end of something to be…tiresome…

For this week, I’ve (unfortunately) come across a few articles about the internet as a dead issue… the first of these articles presents a more nuanced idea that the internet is dead…that is if you perceive the internet as something separate from the physical reality we live in…because of…wait for it…Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and a slew of other immersive reality social apps…For those who live solely in the eye of social media, I guess that this may be sort of true…or the other 99.99% of humans out there, I find this to sound more like an answer looking for a question…

A more direct assault upon the internet is the recent rant from the artist currently known as Prince, stating that (seemingly only for him) the internet was done. His reasoning was that the demise of the record companies as the sole means to market his products (as in, he is unhappy with the power iTunes seems to have…) has rendered the internet (presumably taken of whole cloth) to be done…kaput. As with the social media mavens, this sort of solipsistic view of life has some obvious limitations…
